Cancer in children is rare but serious. It happens when abnormal cells grow quickly and spread to other parts of the body. Some common types seen in children are leukaemia, brain tumours, lymphoma, and bone cancer. With the right care, many children recover and live healthy lives.

Common Childhood Cancers

  • Leukaemia (blood cancer)
  • Brain and spinal cord tumours
  • Lymphoma
  • Kidney cancer (Wilms tumour)
  • Bone cancer
  • Neuroblastoma (nerve cell cancer)
  • Eye cancer (Retinoblastoma)

  • Skin changes or lumps
  • Ongoing tiredness
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Frequent fevers or infections

What Causes Childhood Cancer?

“In most cases, the exact cause is not known. Childhood cancer is rarely linked to lifestyle or environment. It usually happens due to changes in the child’s cells while growing. Research and early testing help find the right treatment and increase chances of recovery.”

Treatment for Children with Cancer

Children are cared for by special doctors called paediatric oncologists. Treatment may include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery or stem cell transplant. Supportive care and counselling also help families cope during this difficult time. Many children get better with proper treatment and long-term care.

Important parts of cancer care in children include:

  • Early diagnosis and specialised tests
  • Effective treatment plans based on the child’s needs
  • Follow-up care and emotional support
